A note on an interesting association of the crab Platypodiella picta (A. Milne-Edwards 1869) and species of Zoantharia Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Holthuis, L.B..
In the framework of the CANCAP-Project, a long-term oceanographic collecting program performed by the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, extensive shore collections were made from 1976 onwards on most of the Macaronesian Islands. During the collecting trips, a very ornamental crab, Platypodi ella picta (A.MILNE EDWARDS, 1869) was found on three occasions by the senior author. In addition the species was collected on the coast of Senegal. In all cases it was found associated with species of Zoantharia.

A NOTE ON FORECASTING WITH ECONOMETRIC MODELS AgEcon
Allen, P. Geoffrey.
Forecasts made by econometricians are typically conditioned on actual values of explanatory variables, even when at the time of the forecast, such variables might not be available. As a first step, one might test the adequacy of econometric specification by comparing conditional post sample forecasts with those of a univariate ARIMA model. Second, when explanatory variables must themselves be forecast, those for which this can be done only badly, should be omitted from the final model. A better forecast will result. An example of screening out badly forecasted explanatory variables is presented.

A Note on the Use of a Logarithmic Time Trend AgEcon
Watts, Geof; Quiggin, John C..
It is shown that parameter estimates in a regression with a logarithmic time trend are not invariant to the choice of the starting point of that time trend. Possible solutions to this problem are discussed and applied to data from a recent article in this Review where a logarithmic time trend was included. It is suggested that the appropriate course is either to estimate the starting date directly or to adopt a functional form invariant to the choice of starting date.

A Preliminary Benefit Cost Analysis of the Inland Diversion of the Coastal Rivers of New South Wales AgEcon
Davidson, Bruce Robinson.
The Water Resources Commission of New South Wales has calculated the capital and operating costs of diverting the amount of water which would be available in the driest year from the major coastal rivers to the inland streams of New South Wales. A preliminary benefit cost analysis of the least cost diversion to each inland stream, using a discount rate of 3 per cent, indicates that at present prices and yields none of the projects would have a benefit cost ratio of greater than 0.93, even if all of the diverted water were utilised immediately by farmers for the most profitable activity. If a discount rate of 7 per cent is used, this benefit cost ratio would decline to 0.52. If water is taken up at the same rate as it was after Copeton Dam was completed...

A PRODUCER'S WILLINGNESS TO PAY FOR INFORMATION UNDER PRICE UNCERTAINTY: THEORY AND APPLICATION AgEcon
Roe, Terry L.; Antonovitz, Frances.
The theory of the competitive firm under price uncertainty is used to develop a money metric of a producer's willingness to pay for additional information. For a restricted class of utility functions, empirical estimates of the money using secondary data can be derived from the firm's risk averse supply or factor demand function. The procedure is illustrated by an application to an agricultural market.

A REVIEW AND EVALUATION OF WEATHER-CROP YIELD MODELS AgEcon
Geigel, Joanne M.; Sundquist, W. Burt.
The purpose of this paper is the relatively limited one of reviewing the literature for models which develop specific relationships between climatic variables and crop yields. Following a review of recent weather-crop yield modeling efforts we evaluate these models and suggest some conceptual models and data base improvements if we are to adequately project the impacts on crop production of expected future climatic change. Our review and evaluation centers on weather-crop yield models applicable to the central grain belt of the U.S., mainly the Corn Belt and Great Plains production regions.

A review of 1973 -1982 tuna fishing activities within Nigeria's eez and the option for Nigeria OceanDocs
Ajayi, T.O..
Examination of published information on temperature, oxygen and other environmental preferences of tuna and tuna like fishes suggests that the Nigerian EEZ should have commercial quantities of the fishes. ICCAT historical catch and effort data analysed are confirmatory. Given the prevailing low level of maintenance consciousness, initial investments and skills required, purse-seine may not be decidedly superior to pole and line as the capture technique. Preferred sizes of vessel type and gear specific scenarios are described. It appears that fuel cost can attract some of the multinational fleets to Nigeria and that transhipment facilities and a local cannery are advantageous.

A revision of the Crane-fly genus Nephrotoma Meigen, 1803, in North America (Diptera, Tipulidae). Part II: the non-dorsalis species-groups Naturalis
Oosterbroek, Pjotr.
Seventeen nearctic species of Nephrotoma are revised. They are assigned to seven species-groups. Together with the 20 species of the dorsalis-group (Tangelder, 1983), this covers all the nearctic Nephrotoma species. Presented here for every species are: literature, type-material, synonyms, description with figures for most genital characters, biology and distribution. For the species-groups, it is indicated to which palaearctic species-groups they belong. For the species, the closely related palaearctic species are mentioned. This information is summarized in fig. 1. The species, with their synonyms and distribution are summarized in table 1. The species subalterna, byersi, and tealei are described for the first time.

A STUDY OF THE COTTON SUBSECTOR IN BURKINA FASO AgEcon
Traore, Sogossi K..
Burkina Faso is a landlocked country of the Sahel, bordered on the south by the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo and Benin, on the east by Niger, and on the northwest by Mali. The climate of Burkina is primarily sudanian. The country lacks mineral resources that can be exploited profitably with present technology. Burkina economic progress depends primarily on the performance of its agricultural sector, which employs 80-90 percent of the population. Crop cultivation is still the dominant activity in agriculture. Cotton is the main export crop and a growing source of farmer income. In Burkina Faso, cotton represented some 40 percent of the total recorded exports in recent years. In view of the prominent position of cotton in the Burkina economy, the...

A study on the Gut contents of live Juvenile Loggerhead Turtles, Caretta Caretta (Linnaeus) (Reptilia, Cheloniidae), from the South-Eastern part of the North Atlantic Ocean, with emphasis on Coelenterate Identification Naturalis
Nierop, M.M. van; Hartog, J.C. den.
The gut contents of five juvenile individuals of the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta (L.) from waters around Madeira, Selvagem Grande (Selvagens Islands) and São Miguel (Azores) were analysed macro- and microscopically. Macroscopic investigations showed that epipelagic salps (e.g., Pyrosoma atlanticum Péron) and gastropods (e.g., Ianthina spp. and Pterotrachea spp.) constituted an important part of the food remains present in these loggerheads. To a lesser extent this also holds for organisms such as goose-barnacles (Lepas spp.). and Idotea metallica Bosc, which live on drifting materials, including algae. Microscopic examination revealed the presence in all turtles of large numbers of nematocysts, deriving mainly from Siphonophora and to a lesser extent...

A study on the Gut contents of six Leathery Turtles Dermochelys Coriacea (Linnaeus) (Reptilia: Testudines: Dermochelyidae) from British waters and from the Netherlands Naturalis
Hartog, J.C. den; Nierop, M.M. van.
Microscopical investigations of the gut contents of six individuals of Dermochelys coriacea from southern England and the North Sea revealed the presence in all of these of numerous nematocysts, mainly scyphozoan. Only six species of Scyphozoa occur in British shallow waters and in the North Sea, viz., Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål), Chrysaora hysoscella (L.), Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.), C. lamarckii (L.) and Rhizostoma octopus (L.). For the purpose of comparison and identification an inventory was made of the cnidom of these six species (based on preserved material). Nematocysts of one or more of these species appeared to be present in each of the turtles, all six species being represented. One of the turtles in addition appeared to have...
